Wi-Fi Gets a New Name – Wi-Fi HaLow

Wi-Fi connects most of your gadgets in your home, then why can’t it be connected to your smart home devices too? You can connect, but many are not willing to connect smart home devices with Wi-Fi as it consumes large amount of power and it is a big problem for companies to produce device to be small, cheap and able to run for several years.

But, Wi-Fi Alliance announced that new low power and long range version of Wi-Fi called as Wi-Fi HaLow which will boost IoT connections. It is based on IEEE 802.11ah specification and soon will be used for every smart homes device. Even in connected cars where several batteries operated sensors can be connected to single Wi-Fi Access Point.

As per source, the Wi-Fi Alliance expects to launch certification process for Wi-Fi HaLow products in 2018. The products supporting this specification will be made available in the market earlier. It will operate in the unlicensed wireless spectrum below 1GHz, which will allow it to penetrate into the walls and barriers because of the propagation capabilities of low-frequency radio waves. Its range is estimated to be double the today’s available Wi-Fi ranging as high as 1 kilometer, a distance equal to 3,280 feet or more than half a mile.

Wi-Fi Alliance also stated that Wi-Fi HaLow’s highest data rate will be 18Mbps and to get this, equipment makers will need to use 4MHz wide channel. Its lowest data rate will be 150Kbps.

Battery benefits of Wi-Fi HaLow

The slow throughput of Wi-Fi HaLow will make little difference for many of the IoT devices in future, where sensors are battery operated and transmit irregular short bursts of data. In devices related with HD videos and other data intense application, faster output will make a big difference.

For example, sensor on water pump or water leak detector in a basement would gain many benefits from Wi-Fi HaLow at low power. As per source, user in smart city may connect to smart parking meters to a centralized AP. The low-power capability for such AP requires less power to send transmissions, thus Wi-Fi HaLow will allow devices to run for months or years on their batteries.

Further, upcoming AP will be tri band which support HaLow at 900MHz band and even at older 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands. Users need to buy devices which support HaLow properties. Many users will get their latest update through Wi-Fi.

Additional benefits of Wi-Fi HaLow is that user experience it as same as the existing Wi-Fi protocol like multi-vendor interoperability, strong government-grade security, ease in setup and also Internet Protocol characteristics.

Usage of WeatherIf in iPhone

How much snow are we supposed to get today? What is the weather going to be like? How far away the storm is? Get to know these weather forecasting information, using iPhone’s exclusive application, WeatherIf, which delivers the weather updates to user each morning. This application is very convenient to use as it sends the weather updates as notifications to the user every day, without requiring any operation.

To get the notifications, you have to launch the app and just enable your location settings or enter your current spot manually. That’s it! You don’t need to touch the app anymore. Choose your own wakeup time to get the notifications. You’ll get the daily updates of weather condition surrounding your locality spontaneously. The notifications are analyzed and provided based on different conditions of weather like rainy, cloudy, windy, snowy, clear and the daily forecast.

The five basic updates like rainy, snowy, cloudy, windy and clear will alert you about the weather condition of the next day, whereas, using “daily forecast”, you will get to know the weather condition of current day. As per your choice, you can sign in for one or more updates like rainy or cloudy etc.

To get a quick glance at the current weather condition, enable Today widget in notification center which includes more information like current temperature, highs and lows, humidity, wind, precipitation, and pressure. You can be certain with this app about the approaching weather conditions. But, notifying about tomorrow’s clear skies is of no use. Similarly the cloudy and windy notifications seems to be not required as important information. Rather you can sign up to rainy and snowy notifications.

WeatherIf is not a highly advanced or fancy app, but it notifies you about the weather change instantly which comes in handy. It is available in App store which costs $1.99, £1.49 and AU$2.99.

Usage of iPad New Keyboard on iOS 9

With the release of iOS 9, Apple has introduced several new enhancements to iPhone and iPad. With the help of those improvements, major changes are made to the virtual keyboard. So, now iPad keyboards are gaining popularity and have become a major competitor for other smart phones. To access keyboard in iPad, just tap on a text field like composing an email, writing a note, then the keyboard will appear on your iPad screen.

Here are some common features available in iOS 9 and its earlier versions:

  • Auto correction facility
  • It provides suggestions while typing words
  • If you get bored of texting, it gives you sticker options, you can talk through stickers
  • Possible to move the cursor to the desired location instead of deleting the whole text to reach the desired location
  • Shortcut keys for copy paste

These are the features which are available with iPod keyboard. But in iOS 9 these keyboard features are improved to provide better performance to the users. Most of the iPad users are unaware about these features. So here is a simple guide about what all changes made to your keyboard and how to take benefit of this feature.

New features available in iPad new keyboard:

  • Shift key is altered in new keyboard; shift off– letters on the keyboard are lower case and Shift on– then letters on the keyboard are upper case.
  • New shortcut bar is introduced in iPad keyboard which contains editing tools like cut, copy, paste, and undo/redo.
  • The “Globe” icon which is used to switch between input methods in earlier iOS version is changed. Now it is “smiley” icon through which you can use all those emoji.
  • For switching keyboards you have to long press on the smiley icon. You will get two options, one is to select built-in emoji panel and second option is to switch to other keyboard.
  • iPad users can swipe on the keyboard with two fingers to access the trackpad mode. You can use two finger gestures to control the cursor in new keyboard. So, now it is very easy to perform cut, paste and select operation.

Keyboard settings:

Even it is possible to alter the settings of the keyboard. For modifying keyboard settings just go through the following steps:

  • Open Settings and then go to General menu.
  • On General menu, scroll down until you see the ‘Keyboard’ option and once you find ‘Keyboard’ option tap on it.
  • For here you can easily turn on and off certain feature, also possible to create shortcuts etc.
